Second Start Program

Did you step away from Sonoma State University (SSU) due to academic difficulties or low GPA? Are you now looking to return to your dream of earning a college degree after being away three or more years? If so, Sonoma State University (SSU) is excited to announce our new "Second Start" program designed specifically for individuals like yourself.

Why College Matters

Research has shown time and again that obtaining a four-year degree leads to significant increases in earning potential.

“A 2002 Census Bureau study estimated that in 1999, the average lifetime earnings of a Bachelor’s degree holder was $2.7 million (2009 dollars), 75 percent more than that earned by high school graduates in 1999. Today, we find similar numbers — but since 1999, the premium on college education has grown to 84 percent. In other words, over a lifetime, a Bachelor’s degree is worth $2.8 million on average.”

Program Objective

To re-enroll former SSU students with GPAs below 2.00 into an undergraduate degree program at Sonoma State University (SSU).

Program Benefits

Students who meet eligibility requirements will have a second chance to earn a new GPA moving forward while maintaining credit from all previous coursework that they successfully completed. In other words, the student will start with a clean slate given that previous grades will not be included in the new GPA calculation.

How to Get Started

Book an appointment now or later with the Second Start Program Coordinator, Anthony Korsund. Note that appointments must be booked at least one day in advance.

After the initial advising appointment with the program coordinator, students will become familiar with how to apply to Sonoma State University (SSU) through Cal State Apply and program expectations, policies and procedures, as well as eligibility criteria regarding the required 2.5 GPA in the initial 12-graded semester units.

Once students decide to join the program and sign the Second Start Pledge (reviewed at time of appointment), they will, upon successful admission to the University, be assigned an academic advisor who will assist the student to select appropriate courses to satisfy the 12-graded units to be completed in their first year. Students should expect to meet with their assigned Second Start advisor at least once per semester throughout their academic career.
